TULSA, Okla. —

Recent gun violence including the Aurora, Colo. movie theater shooting, the Sandy Hook massacre as well as the quadruple murder at 61st and Peoria is motivating many Tulsa moms to get their handgun permit and carry a gun.

One mom KRMG spoke with is gun shopping while waiting for her handgun permit to arrive in the mail. The former teacher asked that her name not be used.

She says that she took her handgun carry class just a week beforeĀ  the tradgedy at Sandy Hook. That incident reminded her of the drills she did with her students. She says, "We called them I.O.C. drills, intruder on campus drills. I can remember every time we would have one of those and I would be cowering in the corner with all of my students . They're all behind me and I'm explaining to them the importance of being quite, of being still."

That mom has several reasons for buying a gun and getting the permit to carry it. One of those was a situation downtown where her family, including two small children, were confronted by a threatening person. She says, "I don't like that feeling of knowing that I'm defenseless. If somebody is going to attack me, I'd at least like to have something."

That mom says she likes knowing she can defender herself and her children if necessary.
