If you want an indication of progress at I-44 and Peoria, just look to the corner of the old Camelot hotel.

You will see dirt work in progress for a new QuikTrip store.

The company announced the store more than three years ago but then put the construction on hold because of road construction related to the widening on the highway.

At the time, the announcement had tremendous sentimental reasons.

"It's been a long time, I mean, we wanted to do this on our 50th anniversary but again we learned a lesson way back in 1958 why QuikTrip was not the first convenience store in town and it was called road construction.  So, we let our emotions carry us for the moment but then reality set in," says QT's Mike Thornbrugh.

Three years ago, he says the location and timing was filled with sentimental reasons because it would have been the 500th store for QT on its 50th anniversary and across the street from the original location for the first store.

“Talk about being a patient company- we are that.  It took us 50 years to remember lesson number one but we remembered it and again we are very, very patient and we learned a lot of lessons over the year- we just won't repeat them,” says Thornbrugh.

He tells KRMG the new store could open by October.
