Psychiatrist charged, pharmacist sentenced in OKC

Five of the patients died

Oklahoma City (AP) —

An Oklahoma City psychiatrist has been charged and a Tennessee pharmacist sentenced in separate prescription drug cases in Oklahoma.

A federal indictment released Wednesday alleges psychiatrist Dr. Amar Bhandary illegally distributed prescription painkillers and anti-anxiety medications to eight patients.

The indictment says five of the patients died.

An attorney for Bhandary is not listed and a recording on his office phone said the office is being closed.

U.S. Attorney Sanford Coats also announced Wednesday that pharmacist Cecil Wayne Parker of Newport, Tenn., was sentenced to three years' probation for interstate distribution of prescription drugs without a license.

Coats said Parker mailed drugs ranging from blood pressure medications to pain medicines from Alabama to Norman.

Parker pleaded guilty to the charge in September and has surrendered his pharmacist's license.
