Parents jailed after ferrets eat baby's face

Police say the animals chewed away the one-month old’s nose, cheek, and upper lip as she sat strapped in a car seat in the family’s living room.

"This is the most horrific thing I've seen happen to a child 45 years in this town," Darby Police Chief Robert Smythe told WCAU.

Smythe said the parents, Burnie Fraim, and Jessica Benales both suffer from developmental disabilities. They claim they were upstairs when the animals escaped from a cage and attacked the baby. Benales told police she ran downstairs as soon as she heard the child crying.

Smythe isn’t buying that.

"You think that much flesh would be gone by the time you get down there," he questioned. NBC10 reports doctors put stents in the girl's nose, making it possible for her to breathe. She's listed in stable condition but will require more surgery to repair other damage.

The parents have been charged with child endangerment.
