Owasso Police warn businesses to be on lookout for more counterfeits

Owasso, Okla. —

As fake money goes, Owasso Police say it's not very convincing-looking.

Nevertheless, over the past few weeks, counterfeit bills were successfully passed at several Owasso businesses before they say a teenager was nabbed late Monday night trying to pass a fake $50 bill at the Murphy's gas station on 96th Street North.

And they say there may be more suspects out there still doing the same thing.

Owasso Police Sgt. Nick Boatman says the counterfeits are amateurish, but because they're passed at busy places like gas stations and fast-food restaurants, they haven't been spotted by the clerks.

"They're hitting these high-profile businesses that accept money quickly from lots of customers, where the clerks aren't paying attention to each individual bill," Boatman said.  "They're just accepting the money and going on."

He urged businesses to stay alert and look for the fakes, because he says in this case, they shouldn't be difficult to spot.

Boatman said they don't know if the suspect, 19-year-old Nicholas Dewayne Sanders, actually made the counterfeit bill himself.

But they feel sure that Sanders knew the money was fake when he tried to use it.
