Oklahoma National Guard honored at state Capitol

The Oklahoma Legislature has honored the almost 10,000 soldiers who serve in the state's Army and Air National Guard.

The state House and Senate met in a joint session Tuesday in an annual observance that recognizes members of the National Guard as well as military veterans who served with the former 45th Infantry Division, especially during World War II and the Korean War.

Oklahoma's adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Robbie L. Asher, says members of the National Guard serve the state during times of war but also during civil emergencies. Hundreds of National Guard members were mobilized following the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and assisted in search and rescue efforts.

The 45th Infantry Division was deactivated in 1968 and was replaced with three brigade-sized elements, which compose the Oklahoma National Guard.
