TULSA, Okla. —

The Republican candidate for Oklahoma's hotly-contested 2nd Congressional District has had to take a break from the campaign trail due to a medical issue.

Markwayne Mullin, a businessman who won a run-off to become the Republican candidate late last month, tells KRMG he plans to return to work and to the race as quickly as possible.

In a statement emailed to the newsroom, Mullin writes "Unfortunately, I had to go to the hospital last night and they found that I have a small tear in my esophagus. I'm feeling just fine and in good condition while they run a few more tests, and they are telling me right now that it should heal just fine on its own. Although the situation isn't serious, I would appreciate your prayers for my healing, and for the doctors and nurses who have to deal with me while I would much rather be out campaigning."

Mullin's opponent is Democrat Rob Wallace, who also won a runoff Aug. 30.
