Not all gun owners eager to carry in the open

TULSA, Okla. —

You might assume that every conceal-and-carry permit holder in Oklahoma is chomping at the bit to carry their weapon in the open, if the open carry bill working its way through the legislature  is passed and signed by Governor Mary Fallin.

But a small sampling of gun enthusiasts at the 2-A Shooting Center near Yale and Admiral revealed the opposite.

Most of the people KRMG talked to said that while they strongly support the right to open-carry, they likely would not carry their gun in the open for a variety of reasons.

One man said he just thought it would be impolite.

"It may be a little too intimidating to some kids, children, people's wives, people who might've been robbed on a previous occasion and are skittish about weapons."

Another man who carries a concealed weapon said he simply doesn't think carrying the gun in the open serves much of a useful purpose.

"What I do, it wouldn't really do me much good, but it is nice to have that option."

Still another gun owner said he wouldn't want to lose the element of surprise over a criminal by carrying his gun in the open.

"Bad guy comes into a grocery store trying to rob you, it makes you a target," he said.  "You're the first one he's going to shoot at, because you've got a pistol on.  If you're concealed, he has no idea.

We did talk to one man though who said he thought open-carry would create a stronger deterrent to criminals than conceal-carry.
