No relief from Tulsa meth epidemic

2011 was a record year for methamphetamine labs in Tulsa.

There were a total of 431 reported meth labs.

And the numbers for 2012 are equally sobering: “This year we’re at 87 and that’s only through April 12th, said Tulsa Police Department spokesman Leland Ashley.  “We’re trying our best to get a handle on it but it’s very difficult when you have individuals that decide that meth is going to be their drug of choice and they’re going to do whatever it takes to get it.”

In 2007 there were less than two dozen meth labs in Tulsa.

Ashley says the explosion in meth labs is no doubt linked to the popularity of so called one pot meth labs: “That is probably the easiest for a meth cook…the less complicated.  But its’ also the most volatile,” said Ashley.

Authorities say meth makers brought the one-pot lab epidemic to Oklahoma from Washington State.

And Tulsa is the epicenter of the one pot or shake and bake method of making meth.
