New medal for drone operators angers some veterans

Medal ranks higher than Bronze Star or Purple Heart

The honor is called the Distinguished Warfare Medal and it’s considered to have a higher ranking than the Bronze Star or even the Purple Heart.

Both of those are given for bravery in battle.

That has not gone without being noticed and has some veterans who earned their medals on the field of battle complaining that drone operators don’t have to take the same risks.

A petition has been started to have the White House demote the medal. That petition has already been signed by nearly 6,000 people.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta calls the new medal “an injustice to those who have served and risked their lives."
