Murder, hate crime charges filed against Good Friday shooters

North Tulsa spree killing suspects Alvin Watts and Jacob England

Tulsa, Okla. —

Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris filed ten charges against each of the suspects in the Good Friday shootings in north Tulsa.

Both 19-year-old Jake England and 31-year-old Alvin Watts were charged with three county of first-degree murder, two counts of shooting with intent to kill, and five counts of Malicious Harrassment.

Malicious Harrassment is defined as a person who acts "maliciously and with the specific intent to intimidate or harrass another person because of that person's race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, or disability", commonly referred to as a hate crime.

Even though the hate crime statute doesn't carry a heavy penalty, a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine, it was important to many citizens that this case be classified as a hate crime.

The D.A.'s office said it would not be commenting on specific evidence in the case.

First Assistant D.A. Doug Drummond said a decision on whether to seek the death penalty for England and Watts would be made later, probably after the preliminary hearing phase.
