TULSA, Okla. —

A 19-year-old soldier's long journey from a battlefield in Afghanistan to a cemetery in rural Mayes County has come to a close.

Pfc. Jon Townsend lies near his grandfather at Lone Chapel Cemetery, southwest of Adair.

He died in an ambush in Zabul Province, Afghanistan Sept. 16th, ambushed by an Afghan reportedly dressed as a police officer.

Three other American soldiers also died that day.

Townsend's body returned to Green Country Thursday morning, landing at Tulsa International Airport at 10:30 a.m.

A motorcade including dozens of law enforcement vehicles, private cars, and motorcycles representing several organizations escorted his hearse to Rice Funeral Services in Claremore.

Friday morning, Townsend's family and friends gathered at the First Baptist Church in Claremore. Again, hundreds turned out to support the family and honor Jon's memory.

They lined up and down Will Rogers Boulevard before the service, and Patti Page Blvd. afterward. More crowds stood along U.S. 66, saluting, waving flags, and often crying as the soldier went to his final rest.

Jon was interred at Lone Chapel Cemetery, a small family cemetery southwest of Adair.
