Tulsa, Okla. —

GOP Congressional candidate Markwayne Mullin, a staunch critic of the federal stimulus plan, is being criticized by his Democratic opponent Rob Wallace because Mullin's plumbing company was paid for work it did for the Cherokee and Creek nations with federal stimulus money.

"He's trying to have it both ways," Wallace said. "How do you call it horrible government waste and then profit from it?"

Mullin said he had no idea that the Cherokee and Creek nations were paying for the plumbing work with federal stimulus money and said it's not realistic to find out.

"I mean, there's no way for us to know how that's being funded," Mullin said.  "Our checks were from Cherokee Nation and our bid was to Cherokee Nation."

The amount that his companies received from the Cherokee and Creek nations is roughly $370,000.

He compared it to a landlord trying to figure out where all his tenants were getting their money from.

But Wallace said he believes it would be possible for Mullin to determine the source of his clients' money and that, as a candidate running for office, he's obligated to do so.

"Landlords all the time, in their application process, have tenants fill out what their source of income is, what the amount of their income is, they verify all that through credit reports," Wallace said.
