TULSA —

On a recent visit to Sand Springs, a KRMG reporter saw a QuikTrip unlike anything he'd ever seen.

It's a modular QuikTrip near the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 51., clearly a temporary building next to the site where the previous QT building was demolished.

The gas pumps remain, but all other business is transacted in the small, modular structure.

Mike Thornbrugh of QT corporate tells KRMG it's a "test case" for the company, which is in the process of rebuilding all of its older units in the new, "third generation" style.

"Typically when we rebuild a store on the same property, a lot of times there's enough space where you can build the new store and keep the existing store in operation, and it just wasn't going to work at this particular spot."

So the company hit upon the idea of the modular building.

"We're just testing to see what iwe put a temporary building, and we tear down the existing building, and see how that affects business. So we don't know if that's going to work or not," Thornbrugh said.

If it does, expect to see several more of the small QuikTrips pop up as they continue to replace their older stores.
