More serious Blue-Green Algae found in Oklahoma lake

By April Hill

There's an update on a story we've been following for weeks.

A busy holiday weekend is upon us, and authorities report finding more dangerous Blue-Green Algae.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says tests revealed algae that's generally found several feet below the surface and hard to spot.

They've closed off Lake Texoma to human contact.

The lake is near the Texas border.

The algae are still present in Green Country lakes too.

State Epidemiologist Becky Coffman says they've been getting quite a few calls from people with symptoms across the state.

We’re getting probably a couple of calls a day on average. So, we’ve interview in the vicinity of 60 or so.”

Advisories also have been issued for portions of Skiatook, Eufaula, Keystone, Waurika, Tenkiller, and Fort Gibson lakes.

Water officials say prolonged heat and steady sunlight have created ideal conditions for algae blooms this year.

Here is a list of contacts in case you start experiencing symptoms.

To report Blue-Green Algae at lakes, call the DEQ Complaint Hotline at 1-800-522-0206.

For treatment or concerns, call the Oklahoma Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

To help state health authorities keep track of cases, call the Oklahoma State Department of Health at 1-405-271-4060.
