Several new cases bring to 11 the total number of confirmed cases of listeriosis in Oklahoma.

And they are all related to bad Colorado cantaloupe.  Laurence Burnsed is Director of the Communicable Disease Division with the Oklahoma Health Department: “These cases are related to the national outbreak tied to consumption of cantaloupe from Jensen Farms of the Rocky Ford growing region.”

Burnsed warns it's possible that new cases of the disease may still occur since the health effects may not appear for as long as 70 days after eating contaminated cantaloupe.

Three of the cases are from Oklahoma County.  Canadian County along with Choctaw, Cleveland, Custer, Kay, Love, McCurtain and Payne County have each had one confirmed case of listeriosis.

The outbreak is blamed for one death in Oklahoma.

Listeriosis is particularly severe for the elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.

State officials recommend that all Oklahomans do not eat recalled cantaloupe shipped by Jensen Farms. The recalled cantaloupes were shipped from Jensen Farms from July 29 through September 10.
