The proposal would extend a portion of the 4 to Fix the County tax originally approved by voters in 2000.

Bartlett says the money would go to several areas including Police and Fire academies as well as street maintenance and public safety.

The tax is 0.167 of a cent but Bartlett expects it to provide as much as 12 million to keep the city on the right side of the budget ledger.

Voters would have to approve the extension and the Mayor has asked that it be placed in the ballot for the November elections.

Bartlett admitted that not having an age out time on the proposal might be a tough sell but he says the tax could be ended after it fulfills its goal.
