Man who invented texting dies

Marko Mikkonen came up with the idea of sending text over cell phones in 1984.

Dubbed the ‘father of SMS,’ Mikkonen didn’t like to take all the credit because he said it was a joint effort thought up over pizza in Copenhagen.

He never made a penny on the invention because he didn’t apply for a patent.

Mikkonen said in a 2012 interview, "I did not consider sms as personal achievement but as result of joint effort to collect ideas and write the specifications of the services based on them.”

Marko Mikkonen was 63.
