Large earthquake rattles Oklahoma

Update on damage and injuries:

The quake caused significant damage to a building at the main intersection of Pawnee, Harrison Street and 6th Street.

The building was originally a bank, built in 1902 by famed western show operator Pawnee Bill (real name Gordon Lillie).

A large section of the southern exterior wall fell from near the top of the two-story building to the sidewalk below.

For a few hours Saturday morning, 6th Street was closed for a block as the damage was assessed.

Other businesses also suffered damage, mostly to items stocked on shelves.

At the Pawnee Liquor Store a couple blocks west of downtown, owner Kris Venable told KRMG she was still adding up the damage.

Her wine inventory took the biggest hit, because all the bottles were glass.

Much of the liquor was in plastic bottles.

Northwest of town, near the epicenter of the quake, there were reports of several homes damaged.

In one case, firefighters told KRMG, a man was injured when he dived on top of his son to protect the boy from a falling chimney.

The man was injured and taken to the hospital; he is expected to recover fully.

The boy was not injured.

There was no damage to the historic Pawnee Bill Museum and Mansion just west of town.

However, a barn at a rural home burned, apparently as a result of a fire sparked by the earthquake.

Firefighters said a number of tractors and other equipment were destroyed by the fire, but that there were no injuries.

Update: The Oklahoma Corporatino Commission ordered disposal well operators to shut down operations at 35 well sites following the 5.6M earthquake in Pawnee Saturday morning.

Most of Oklahoma got shaken awake by a 5.6 magnitude temblor on a sleepy Saturday.

A 3.6 magnitude aftershock hit the same area almost one hour after the initial shaking. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission quake team is headed to the Pawnee area to assess the damage and find out more.

The control tower at Houston International airport reported feeling movement. Other reports coming from as far away as South Bend, Indiana.  Workers say part of main street Pawnee is blocked off due to damage.

Governor Mary Fallin said emergency management is going to assist in Pawnee after the earthquake. They are checking bridges and structures in the area.
