Lankford blames 'welfare moms' for gun violence

Says they put kids on psychotropic drugs to get government money

Oklahoma City, Okla. —

During a meeting with constituents in Oklahoma City that was caught on video, Oklahoma Congressman James Lankford made the comment that "welfare moms" were at least partially to blame for the rash of shootings and gun violence committed by children.

A constituent asked Lankford to address the issue of parents whose children are treated with psychotropic drugs, which the constituent felt could be a cause for violent behavior in kids.

"I agree with that," Lankford responded.  "I think there’s a bunch of issues that, quite frankly, most liberals are afraid to talk about. "

Not only does Lankford think that kids are overmedicated, he said he believes some parents are deliberately putting their kids on medications in a fraudulent attempt to get government assistance.

"We’ve overmedicated kids. Quite frankly some of the overmedication of kids are because welfare moms want to get additional benefits and if they can put them on SSI through maintenance drugs, they can also put them on Social Security disability and get a separate check. That is wrong on every single level. Not only is it fraudulent to the government, but it also tells a kid with great potential, 'don’t try because you’re disabled'", Lankford said.

Lankford's remarks have already drawn the ire of liberal groups.
