Kmart closing store in midtown Tulsa

The latest Tulsa retailer to close up shop is Kmart.

They're only closing the 51st and Harvard store, for now. The company has made no mention of closing the 21st and Hwy 169 location.

KRMG called the Kmart corporate office to find out why the store is closing. We got this answer in an e-mail:

“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model. These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home.

The store has 51 employees. Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. Most of the associates are part time/hourly.”

If you have items on layaway at that store, you can either pay off the balance early or transfer it to the other Tulsa store or to the online store.

The store will close July 12, but the blowout sale starts Sunday, May 17.
