House bill banning children from lottery promotions gets unanimous approval in Oklahoma State Senate

An Oklahoma State House bill prohibiting children from appearing in promotions for the Oklahoma Lottery wins State Senate approval.

Senator Cliff Aldrich of Midwest City had some questions for the bill's co-author, Senator Ron Justice of Chickasha.

Aldrich asked, "People sometimes relate the kids to education, so by taking them out, do you think it'll have an adverse effect on the amount of money that goes to education for the lottery?"

Justice responded, "I don't know if it will or not. I don't know how to determine that."

But Senator Richard Lerblance of Hartshorne wanted clarification of how the bill defines "children."

He said, "I have three children and both of them are over 21, so by reading this bill, they could not be in an advertisement for the lottery?"

Justice said, "Senator Lerblance, I think that you and I both know that that's not the intent of this bill."

But Lerblance asked, "It's my understanding that you've got to be 21 to buy a lottery ticket, so what about the 19 and 20-year olds, would they be prohibited from being in these ads"?

Justice said, "I'm sure it would be anyone that's under the age of 18."

The bill passed unanimously, but language banning anyone under age 18 from lottery promotions will likely be added.
