Eating horses taboo in US, commonplace in Europe, Asia

By Chris Cordt

A manufacturing plant producing horse meat could be a reality in Oklahoma.

Last November, President Obama signed legislation lifting the ban on horse slaughter and allowed the USDA to regulate it.

Proponents claim the facilities would lower horse abandonment and neglect.

Valerie Pringle with the National Humane Society disagrees.

I don't think we send our dogs and cats to slaughter and I don't think we should send our horses to slaughter either."

Tulsans that KRMG spoke with had similar responses.

They include: 'Sounds a little weird to me,' 'Stick with the cow meat,' "There's something about it that just doesn't seem right."

While the idea of eating horses is taboo in the US, it is commonplace in Europe and Asia.
