In the aftermath of the storms that raked our state, storm shelter companies are seeing an increase in questions and calls.

Brad Webb with stormsaferooms.com tells KRMG it's already been a busy spring.

“Seems like more and more people are getting more tuned in on these storms and it seems there are more of them.  And the more and more tornadoes seems to be happening the more people seem to be, that weren't thinking about them in the past, are thinking about them,” says Webb.

“I was getting probably 15 to 20 emails every day last week and now I am getting about 100 emails a day since the weekend,” says Webb.

Tom Bennett with Jim Giles Safe Rooms says it is typical to see an increase in calls right after a deadly tornado.

“The real big peak occurred right after Joplin and Piedmont and then again it occurred here right at the beginning of the season whenever Illinois and Indiana were hit back in February and March, that was a real big spike and also Alabama,” says Bennett.

He says the waiting list with Jim Giles’ Safe Rooms is about 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.

Bennett is also with the National Storm Shelter Association and explained some of the price ranges to KRMG.

He says costs typically start about $3,500 for a below ground and about $4,000 for above ground safe room or storm shelter.

National storm shelter association is a trade association that monitors compliance with FEMA  guidelines and International Co-Council standards which says a safe room must withstand  250 mph surface winds.

"Our best-selling safe room is $4295 delivered and installed, an above-ground safe room 4 x 6, 4 to 5 person a 1/4 inch steel,” says Webb.

He says most of those are installed in the garage, but his company does have one that can be bolted into an existing closet.

Webb told KRMG one of the areas where he’s seen the biggest increase in business is from companies ordering safe rooms for their employees.

He cites work his company is doing in Tennessee is installing two safe rooms to hold 130 people and for a company in Alabama who wants safe room for 100 people.
