Kiefer, Okla. —

A gun was found in a four-year-old student's backpack on Tuesday at a preschool.

Kiefer Public Schools attorney Steve Mathis said the gun was found by a teacher.  She then acted quickly to resolve the situation.

"She was going through the bag for the student's homework and found it," Mathis said.  "The student didn't really know what in the world was going on."

The school district immediately called the Kiefer Police department.  Mathis said the teacher and the school did everything exactly right.

"I'm incredibly proud of how the district handled the situation," Mathis said.  "They followed their procedures."

Kiefer PD read a prepared statement to KRMG News.

"The weapon was inadvertently brought to the school by a 4-year-old student," the statement read.  "At this point there doesn't appear to be any intentional criminal activity."

Information regarding the investigation will be turned over to the Creek County District Attorney's office some time on Friday.

Mathis said the young student didn't know about the gun and won't face any kind of punishment from the school.

No word on how the gun ended up in the backpack.
