Golf tournament to honor fallen Oklahoma soldier

The 4th Annual 2LT Jered Ewy Memorial Golf Tournament takes place May 29 at the Coffee Creek Golf Course in Edmond, Oklahoma.

In 2011, 2LT Jered Ewy, 33, of Edmond, was killed by an IED in Afghanistan while deployed with the Oklahoma Army National Guard.

“There were fourteen total that were killed from the Oklahoma National Guard that year, on that deployment,” Jered’s widow, Megan Ewy, said. “Jered was the first.”

The foundation was originally started by family to aid their daughter’s education. She was just seven weeks old when Jered died.

Jered was at Camp Shelby in Mississippi for redeployment training when Megan went into labor. He got there just in time for the birth and left for Afghanistan less than two weeks later.

“Getting that knock on the door on July 29, after he had been killed,” Megan said. “Complete and utter shock. I didn’t even realize honestly, why they were there.”

Megan changed the direction of the foundation in 2012. After setting some money aside for their daughter’s education, she worked with the University of Central Oklahoma to start up the 2nd Lt. Jered Ewy Military Endowed Scholarship.

The scholarship aids current military and veterans attending the University of Central Oklahoma.

Megan keeps Jered alive through the scholarship, and through conversations with their daughter.

“She knows that her daddy is in heaven,” Megan said. “And we go and visit at the cemetery.”

Talking about why her father is no longer with them is harder.

“He was killed by monsters or bad guys,” Megan said. “How do you explain that to a three year old?”

Funds raised at this year’s tournament will go toward next year’s scholarship.
