Firecrackers bring the heat

By Michael Purdy

Tulsa, Okla. —

It doesn't take long for a fun Independence day to turn tragic.

Each year kids and adults of all ages have fun playing with firecrackers.  Tulsa Fire Department's Tim Smallwood said there is no problem with enjoying the holiday, just be careful.

"We bake cakes at 300 or 350 degrees," Smallwood said.  "Wood burns at 525 degrees.  What most people don't realize is those little sparklers can get up to 1200 degrees."

Firecrackers ignite quickly.  They also let off a little flame when they pop.  This can cause grass and house fires.  Smallwood said the fire also causes skin burns.

"It can be within seconds," Smallwood said.  "Nationwide, there is around 9,000 extra burn injuries with kids because of firecrackers."
