The difference between tornado and flood sirens

The City of Tulsa uses different sirens to alert people of different dangers.

Last week, storms led to some confusion about tornado sirens and flood sirens in and around Tulsa.

A tornado siren is a three-minute one-note tone.

The only change in sound during a tornado siren's wail is caused by wind direction or velocity. The wind can make the warning volume decrease or increase.

The tornado siren tone also doubles as the chemical release warning.

An impending flood siren is a three-minute high-low tone.

The flood warning is unique to the Tulsa community and not part of federal guidelines.

The third type of siren in Tulsa is the nuclear attack siren, a three-minute wavering tone.

There are 80 sirens located throughout the City of Tulsa. If you hear any of them, tune into NEWS1023 KRMG or go to the KRMG app to find out what's going on.
