DRUMRIGHT, Okla —
In Drumright residents are counting their blessings after last weekend's wildfires.
Danny Cooper is Drumright's Acting City Manager.
He says at one point flames were fast approaching the southwest part of town near the new elementary and middle school: “At that point and time we thought we were going to lose the school. If we had lost the school we would have lost the houses. And once it got started on the homes it would have spread diagonally through town."
Cooper says there was nothing to stop the flames: “Our guys literally lined-up side-by-side and surrounded the south and west side of the school and forced the fire to go around the school to the west."
Drumright didn’t get away completely unscathed however.
A number of people lost everything they had and officials were forced to close the Drumright hospital and nursing home for a while. But Cooper says it could’ve been much worse, and he credits the town’s five fulltime firefighters and the numerous volunteers for their heroic efforts. "I credit them for literally saving our community."
Cooper says that without as much public attention as other hard hit areas, they have not seen much outside help, yet.
They are in dire need of cash donations, firefighting equipment and trucks.
Cash donations can be made to any of the churches or to a Victims Relief Fund has been setup at SpiritBank.
Donations can be made at any SpiritBank location.
Several area churches are coordinating efforts to collect and deliver items directly to the victims.
