For years, Councilor Jeannie Cue says, volunteers at the 58th and Peoria Neighborhood House has tried to improve living conditions with food, clothing, GED programs, psychological services, and more.

She tells KRMG in the area bordered by E. 51st St., E. 71st St., S. Riverside Parkway and S. Lewis Ave. has 17 government-supported, multi-family units.

That's a lot of Section 8 apartments, and that does not include single-family homes that are also government supported.

Moreover, she says, 80 percent of the people in the area have no cars, but there are no medical facilities, including vision, dental, or psychological available except by a bus ride that lasts an hour fifteen minutes or more.

She says it's time for the city to take action and make some changes, and hopes to kick start that process with a meeting at City Hall Tuesday evening.

The 61st and Peoria Quality of Life Task Force will meet at 5:30 p.m. in Room 411 at City Hall, 175 E. 2nd St., downtown.

"We can help them get educated, encourage them to get their GEDs, to go back to college, to give them opportunities, but we need a facility that will handle that type of involvement," she told KRMG.

That will take a lot of time, and money, and she hopes the philanthropic nature of Tulsa will show through to make the effort successful.
