The Tulsa City Council voted to delay a change in the drinking water until they can do more research.

The Environmental Protection Agency has ordered cities nationwide to add ammonia by 2012.

Thursday night Robert Bocock gave a lengthy presentation at the council meeting.

Bocock works with Erin Brockovich, who became famous after a movie on water contamination.

He tells councilors, “I’m frustrated that you would add an additional chemical, ammonia, a very harmful toxin to your water when it is already so good.”

The FDA says ammonia has been used in water for 90 years and is safe at low levels.

Many cities have already started using ammonia.

Bocock says, “How many people in this room trust the federal government to be up to speed up to date and telling you to do the right thing."

Bocock talked about potential health hazards like bladder cancer and miscarriages.

Councilor Jack Henderson responded by saying, “You’ve done a great job of scaring me to death.”

The FDA wants to add ammonia because it extends the disinfecting process.
