Tulsa, Okla. —
Poison-control centers around the country are reporting a continuing and increasing problem with kids who eat the new, brightly-colored laundry detergent pods.
"Color, shape, size... To children, it looks very much like candy," said Scott Schaeffer with the Oklahoma Poison Control Center based in Oklahoma City.
According to one report, there have been more than 200 cases around the nation.
In some cases, children who ingest the pod have a reaction where their lips, throat, and tongue will swell to the point where it cuts off their breathing.
Schaeffer said as far as he knows, the makers of the pods have no plans to change their look.
"But there is a movement to make their packages child-resistant, so that children will have a much more difficult time getting into the dispensers," he said.
The hotline for the Oklahoma Poison Control Center is 1-800-222-1222.
