We've all heard of "the man." As in, "the man is keeping me down," or "I'm just working for the man." Well, "the man" seems to be the issue for a new group in town called Occupy Tulsa. This isn't new, the Tulsa faction is taking its cues from folks in New York called Occupy Wall Street. The New York organization began when some people decided that corporate America had darn near ruined the country and they were going to protest. So they sat down in Zuccotti Park at Broadway and Liberty Street, about three blocks from the power brokers on the famous street itself.

That demonstration has been going on since mid September but the group in Tulsa is just getting started. I reached Daniel Lee by phone and he agreed to meet me in downtown Tulsa to further explain what his branch would like to accomplish. "We just feel the same way that they do, that the corporate takeover of America has really been killing our democracy here in the United States" he said. I asked Daniel for a little more depth in his thinking. "I think the biggest part is just making peoples voice heard" he began. He continued "corporations have PR groups, they have advertising, they have a way of having their voice heard far broader than the individual American has."

So this is about having a voice. So my next obvious question was, isn't that voice you're talking about voting? Don't you express yourself and effect change at the ballot box? His response "All these corporations, they buy democracy" he started to explain. "They buy the people through influencing ad campaigns and voter registration campaigns which sounds good but when you come right down to it, they influence the way people vote."

So how will Occupy Tulsa take action? "We are planning on having a demonstration" he said. "We are currently working on the date and the place and the proper permits." And Daniel wanted to make the point that his group is not looking for trouble. "We are committed to non violent protests and becoming something that is organized, not rabble riots in the streets."
