BROKEN ARROW, Okla. —

Arming teachers to protect students is one idea that is getting a lot of attention.

Dr. Jarod Mendenhall is the Superintendent of Broken Arrow Public School. He doesn't want armed teachers in his schools. Mendenhall says, "That's really not the place for that. I prefer we focus on the social, emotional and psychological needs of our children and adults."

Mendenhall stresses that he is not against armed security. Mendenhall says, "I think that having security guards or off-duty police officers at our school sites is the better option."

Counseling is something Mendenhall believes needs to be a bigger focus. Mendenhall says, "I think that's one thing that we have to make sure we do. It's not the guns that cause the problems. It's the people behind the guns."

Mendenhall also points to Rachael's Challenge, an anti-bullying program, as another way to prevent school violence.

Rachel's Challenge is a series of student empowering programs and strategies that equip students and adults to combat bullying and allay feelings of isolation and despair by creating a culture of kindness and compassion.

The programs are based on the writings and life of 17 year-old Rachel Scott who was the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999.
