Broken Arrow, Okla —

Your insurance premium is tied to the level of fire protection in your community.

In the industry, it’s called an ISO rating.

After the recent wildfires and the number of people who didn’t have insurance, we investigated the ISO ratings for the area.

Mannford and Bristow that have been impacted by recent fires are rated a '5'.

We also learned that Sand Springs used to be rated a ‘5’ but improved its rating back in 2007 to a ‘3’.

Sand Springs Fire Chief Mike Wood explains the city has a split rating of a ‘3’ and ‘8B’.

"Basically the difference is going to be water supply.  If a customer is within the 5 miles of a fire station and have (sic) a hydrant within a 1,000 foot, regardless of city limit, then they receive the '3'.  If they are within 5 miles and without a hydrant within 1,000 foot then they receive the 8B," says Wood.

We also learned that Broken Arrow was recently re-evaluated for its ISO rating and got the results back this week.

Broken Arrow Fire Chief Jeff VanDolah tells KRMG the city has a ‘2’ rating.

"The best score you can get is a '1' and there is only one city that is rated a '1' in Oklahoma and that's Midwest City,” says VanDolah.

He tells KRMG the '2' maintains the same rating the city had previously and applies to everyone that lives within the city limits of Broken Arrow.

Much like Sand Springs, Broken Arrow also has a split rating.

VanDolah tells us the '9' applies to people that live in Broken Arrow's run district which is larger than the city limits and live more than than 1,000 feet from a fire hydrant.
