Auto-pedestrian accident on Highway 169 injures man trying to help

Victim dragged by driver who fled the scene

By Don Bishop

A man is hospitalized after a driver hit some barrels about 11 p.m. Thursday on Highway 169 near 41st Street.

"When officers arrived, they discovered that the vehicle was unoccupied and later discovered the driver down in a trailer court directly to the west of the location. He was drunk and was arrested for DUI," Tulsa Police Corporal R.W. Solomon said.

He tells us the man who was injured lives near the scene where the driver hit the barrels.

Solomon says, "A gentleman heard the crash, responded from the trailer park, came up on the roadway looking for possible injuries from the collision."

But when the victim stepped onto the highway to try and help, he was hit by another driver.

"He was removing some debris off of the roadway and was struck by a vehicle," Solomon said.

The vehicle dragged the victim for a short distance and failed to stop after the collision.

"He continued going southbound. The vehicle was a silver or gray SUV."

Solomon also told us that the victim was hospitalized and that he was last reported to be in serious condition.

"Other people on the roadway did stop and try to render assistance to the person that was struck and waited until EMSA units arrived."

Police are still looking for the driver who left the scene after striking the pedestrian.
