Two more deaths are being attributed to the West Nile Virus. The Oklahoma State Department of Health tells KRMG that the death toll now stands at 5.

20 new cases of the disease were also reported. 92 people have contracted the disease.

The numbers are approaching the record numbers of 107 cases and eight deaths recorded in 2007.

The department says both of the latest deaths were in Carter County. Both victims were over the age of 75. The previous deaths were two in Oklahoma County and one in Seminole County.

The majority of the cases, 57 out of 92, have been the neuro-invasive form, the most severe form, which causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord and can lead to mental confusion, disorientation, blindness, paralysis and death.

There is no vaccine or medications to treat West Nile Virus. Treatments usually involve managing the symptoms, such as treating a fever, preventing secondary infections and providing intravenous fluids, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.
