Tulsa Public Schools unveil three proposals to close some schools and save money. Ten to fifteen elementary schools, up to four middle schools and possibly one high school could close according to the proposals released yesterday.

The plans include adding sixth grade to some elementary schools and making some high schools seventh through twelfth grade.

Officials say the district has over 10,000 empty seats and all three plans would cut that number in half.

All three proposals allegedly would save millions of dollars for Tulsa Public Schools.

Central High School could be shut down under one plan while two proposals would make Will Rogers High School a Lottery Magnet school.

All three proposals would close Addams, Barnard, Burroughs, Cherokee, Phillips, Sandburg and Whitman elementary schools.

One proposal would expand Mayo and Thoreau demonstration academies, but relocate them to Grimes Elementary School and Nimitz Middle School.

All Tulsa Public Schools parents and patrons are invited to attend the next community forum. It will be held a week from today at Thoreau Demonstration Academy just west of Memorial on 71st.

Other forums are set for Thursday, April 7th, 2011 at Foster Middle School, 12121 East 21st Place; Monday, April 11th, 2011 at Eugene Field Elementary School at 2249 South Phoenix and Thursday, April 14th, 2011 at Hawthorne Elementary School, 1105 East 33rd Street North.

All forums will be held in the school libraries.

The school board in set to vote on the final proposal on May 2nd, 2011.
