TULSA - A holiday parade turned tragic Thursday when a young boy died at the end of a parade in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Police tell KRMG the 7-year-old boy was riding on a float put together by a local martial arts school.
Witness accounts differ somewhat, but the boy either fell or jumped off the float shortly after the parade as it returned to the staging area.
He fell beneath the float's tires, and was run over.
A nurse in a car immediately behind the float and the float's driver both performed CPR, and the boy was rushed to an OU Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City.
He was pronounced dead there; police have not released his name.
Jenny Monroe, Public Information Specialist with the Edmond Police Department, tells KRMG this was the first fatal accident in the 41-year history of the city's LibertyFest parade.
She described the incident as "heartbreaking."
