Neighbors thought Michelle Singleton led the good life.
She spent her days on a houseboat in Key West, Florida, but they had no idea she had stolen the money that got her there.
In 1996, Singleton was waiting to be sentenced for payroll check fraud in Kansas City when she decided to run.
The New York Daily News says she got all the way to Key West where she obtained a new birth certificate and driver’s license and began living as Catherine Harris.
Things were rolling along smoothly until the Secret Service got a tip that Singleton may be living in Florida. They sent a picture of the woman to cops in Monroe County and one of them recognized her.
Agents went to visit Singleton, and as she tried to find her fake birth certificate, the real one fell on the floor for everyone to see.
She then admitted who she was and was arrested without incident. NBC News reports Singleton told the agents they got there just in time.
She told them she was feeling insecure and had planned to sell the houseboat and move to the Dominican Republic.
