After a winter that was full of powerful storms, this will come as no surprise: It was the worst winter for air travelers in the 20 years that the government has been collecting data.

Transportation officials say in the first three months of the year, U.S. airlines canceled 4.6 percent of their flights.

Airlines are quicker to cancel flights these days, sometimes a day in advance of a storm.

That helps them reduce expenses.
