Woman shot near high school football game

UPDATE: Police say they arrested a 19-year-old for firing an assault rifle several times into an occupied home, endangering people who were leaving a nearby high school football game.

The incident began near North Peoria Avenue and East 51st Street North just before 11:30p.m.

TPD officers were helping traffic leave a football game at nearby McLain Science and Tech High School when they saw a car speed past them.

Police tell KRMG they pulled over the car and found three occupants, as well as a gun, a shell casing and an almost full magazine for the weapon.

Officers identify that weapon as an AK-74 assault rifle.

They say one of the men in the car, whom they identify as Deonte Rashaun Smith, 19, fired several times into a home in the 1300 block of E. 51st Pl. North.

At least five people were in the home at the time, so Smith was jailed on five counts of shooting with intent to kill.

One woman was struck in the hip; EMSA transported her to Hillcrest, she is expected to recover.

Smith faces several felonies, and remains jailed on bonds totaling more than $400,000.

No word on whether the other occupants of the car were arrested.
