Derya Sert was born without a uterus, a very rare medical condition. In 2011 doctors performed the first ever transplant of the organ from a dead donor and 18 months later it appeared to be working.
An egg was then placed in the uterus and all indications are that Sert is pregnant and doing well.
As a precaution Sert will be closely monitored by doctors in Turkey and the baby will be delivered by Caesarean section.
Afterwards doctors plan to remove the womb to cut back on the risk of rejection or other complications.
There are still plenty of dangers for both Sert and her baby. The drugs to help suppress immunity issues and the premature delivery could cause birth defects and other issues.
Sort’s husband Mustafa said they were "happy after the transplant."
He added "with God’s help we will have a baby thanks to this process."
This isn’t the first attempt at such a surgery. A woman in Saudi Arabia received a womb transplant from a living donor but the procedure was a failure and the organ was removed.
