Woman pleads guilty to sexual abuse when she was a man

Susan Rye pleaded guilty this week to sexually abusing a five-year-old girl in 1990.

From there, things get complicated.

Cops in Utah say Rye was living as a man during that time. However, in 2009 Rye’s name changed from Randall to Susan, and began identifying as a woman.

After years of therapy, the girl decided to go to police about the incident.

Making things more unusual, Rye was writing a book at the time of the arrest. "It's a fictional book about incest and the sexual abuse of children," Duchesne County prosecutor Grant Charles told the Deseret News.

Charles says that’s one of the reasons he doesn’t want Rye to be allowed bail before sentencing in October.

"I don't think the psychosexual evaluation went into enough depth to tell us how dangerous (Rye) really is."

Rye’s attorney countered by saying the book was meant to "purge inclinations toward behavior outside societal norms."
