Welfare cash cards banned from casinos, strip clubs, liquor stores in Oklahoma

Welfare recipients in Oklahoma can no longer use their cash cards at liquor stores, casinos or strip clubs under a bill signed into law this week by the governor.

The measure, authored by Sen. Rob Standridge, R-Norman included an emergency clause which allows it to go into effect immediately.

In a statement sent to KRMG, Standridge said “this law ensures these funds serve as a more effective safety net for families in need. Programs like TANF cannot work effectively if the government doesn’t establish meaningful guidelines for their purpose and use.

"This legislation helps guarantee welfare funds are directed to the support of families as they get back on their feet.  I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues and I am thankful the governor has signed the bill into law.”
