Water emergency in Broken Arrow should end by Thursday evening

The second water emergency in a month in Broken Arrow will not create the level of restrictions as the first.

A 24-inch water main burst at the intersection of E. 71st St. (Kenosha) and S. 177th E. Ave. (N. 9th St.) in Broken Arrow early Thursday morning.

A feeder line that charges the water towers on Tiger Hill which sit just southwest of that intersection, the broken main created a huge pool of water, mud and other debris that shut down the roads for a short time.

The city issued a water emergency, telling residents not to water lines, fill swimming pools, or use water for any non-essential purposes.

However, unlike the June 11 emergency which involved the main supply line into the city, Thursday's break will not require restaurants or other businesses to close.

"We do still have water coming into the city," Communications Director Stephanie Higgins told KRMG, unlike the crisis in June.

"We just need to be able to refill those storage tanks," she continued, "which is why we're asking for the rationing."

She said they hope to live those restrictions by Thursday evening, or at the latest, Friday morning.

Heat is suspected as a contributing cause to the failure of the water main.
