Walgreens adds new safes to prevent pharmacy robberies

Robbers will have a tough time getting access to certain drugs at Walgreens stores from now on.

Every location in the state now has the time-lock safes in which certain prescription drugs are kept all day long. When they’re needed, the pharmacists activate the safe and it opens after a certain amount of time.

Walgreens won’t say which drugs are kept in the safe or how long it takes to open, citing safety concerns.

“It eliminates the immediate availability of these drugs.” Walgreens’ District Loss Prevention Manager Mike Schaeffer told KRMG.

Schaeffer says that delay means would-be robbers would have to stay inside the store longer, increasing their chance of being seen on camera or being caught.

Walgreens had the safes in other states before Oklahoma and added them here after realizing how effective they are.
