“Victory or Death” letter returns to Alamo for first time in 177 years

The letter left the Alamo on Feb. 24, 1836, just two weeks before Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his troops breached the walls of the mission and killed every occupant.

Travis was only 26 years old when he was put in charge of the group of men attempting to hold back the Mexican army. They were not able to do so and the battle became part of history.

The cry “remember the Alamo” was said to have been used a month later when Gen. Sam Houston and his men attacked and defeated some of the same army Santa Ana used in the battle in San Antonio.

A police escort took the letter to the Alamo grounds for what will be a 13 day stay. The faded letter is one page with writing on both sides and the signature of  Travis can be seen clearly.
