At first the baby’s parents just thought he had a stomach ache. But when the child’s gut continued to distend and he had trouble breathing, they became more concerned.
That’s when the mother and father of 2 year old Xiao Feng took him to a Chinese hospital where it was found his stomach contained the still growing fetus of his twin brother.
Doctors who removed the fetus said it was acting as a parasite growing to ten inches long while developing a spine and fully formed limbs.
Physicians removed the “growth” immediately.
The condition is called cryptodidymus, it’s a very rare version of conjoined twins.
Cryptodidymus occurs when an egg begins to split after fertilization but never fully separate.
The underdeveloped fetus is then hidden or “stored” in the body of the other.
The journal Medical Daily reports the hidden fetus can’t isn’t able to survive on its own and in some cases will kill the host child.
Doctors in China say Xiao Feng would have likely died had the surgery not happened quickly.
Doctors say the child is doing well.
