A car-train collision near Nowata is fatal for two sisters. The driver, 28-year old Natalie Benham of Nowata, drove her 2008 Ford into the path of a southbound Union Pacific train yesterday four miles south of Nowata, 170 feet east of Highway 169 on County Road 28 in Nowata County. Her children, nine-year old Hailey Marie Benham and six-year old Hannah Daniel Benham, both of Nowata, died at the scene about 3:15 p.m. Monday. Natalie Benham was hospitalized in Tulsa with leg and internal injuries.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol tells us that all three victims were wearing seatbelts.
Two people on the two-car train were not injured.
They were identified as conductor 30-year old Corey Varnold of Carl Junction, Missouri, and engineer 53-year old Matthew Jones of Parsons, Kansas.
